布偶猫是由AnnBaker于年代繁育的;她是加利福尼亚州里弗赛德的一名饲养员。布偶猫品种的起源几乎是由自散放的猫组成。AnnBaker培养了约瑟芬，一只被发现在邻居家乱跑的白色长毛母猫，再和她养育或发现的其他猫相交配。这只雌性的后代有着独特的气质特征，非常惹人喜爱。她为自己的育种计划挑选了一些外表、气质和标准都符合她要求的个体，创造了布偶猫这个品种。
